Bath, a world heritage spectacular city, stands on the river Avon
among the hills of England’s West Country. The city’s
compactness & striking architecture-Roman baths & Sweeping
Georgian terraces combine together to produce a rare piece of beauty
& elegance in the whole of Europe. It was a belief of Celts,
the first inhabitations of Bath that the hot springs were sacred,
but Romans were the first to build the temple & the Baths which
are now restored to their original grandeur.
Bath became England’s premier spa town in the 18th century
under the guidance of socialite, Beau Nash. In Bath’s heydays
this was a hectic place full of bathers, rich & celebrities
from the elite society gathered here to ‘take the waters’
& enjoy the town’s theatres & concert rooms. John
Wood laid the foundation for a new Georgian city to be built using
the honey colored stone giving Bath an indefinable mellow quality.
Dr. Johnson the lexicographer, condemned the practice of mixed public
bathing, stating it an “an instance of barbarity that cannot
be equaled in any part of the world”. So the practice of public
bathing ceased stopped in 1978. But from 2000, under a new scheme
public bathing once again began in a large purpose-built glass fronted
complex just a stone’s throw away.
However, Bath is far from being a fossilized museum piece. Besides
the annual Bath Festival there are many other avenues to bring recognition
to it. There are umpteen other art activities spread here over the
year. Art is permanently at display many places. Bath is also a
home to museums of East Asian Art & Costume.
Accomodation
Bath ironically a world class city in multi dimensions & its
accommodations are at pace. The city would surely suffice your requirements
in so many ways, be it, smart-comfortable-self catering property,
an elegant bed & breakfast arrangement, hospitable inns &
farms, or a top range hotels.
Food
Bath offers irresistible range of cuisines to arouse the taste buds
of its visitors. Fortunate enough to be situated in the heart of
England’s most productive farmlands, Bath is leading the country’s
organic & traditional food movement. It was from nowhere but
from Bath that food nomenclatures like Cheddar Cheese, Bath Bun,
Sally Lunn Bun & Dr. Oliver’s Biscuits evolved.
The city elegantly houses Michelin starred award winning restaurants,
soothing all taste ranges from fine dining to informal, good value,
bistro food. Menu card displays international to wholesome home
cooked dishes. Its eclectic mix of traditional & contemporary
restaurants often confuses the guests to choose. From Japnese,Thai
& Indian, Modern British, French & Spanish, there is something
for everyone.
